In response to these pressures, NATO allies have bolstered military exercises and deployments in Greenland under operations such as Operation Arctic Endurance, demonstrating resolve to protect the territory.
Norway and other Nordic NATO members have emphasized that Russia remains the main threat in the Arctic, even as intra-alliance strains complicate unified stances.
Russia’s Role and Reactions
While Moscow publicly downplays direct ambitions to seize Greenland, it has maintained a robust military presence across the Arctic, upgrading bases and naval assets to assert its influence over northern sea routes and strategic depth.
At times, Russian diplomats have warned of “military and technical measures” in response to armed conflict over Greenland, signaling that Moscow would not remain indifferent to security developments there.
Despite occasional statements calling the issue “none of our business,” the Kremlin’s broader Arctic strategy reflects profound concerns about NATO expansion and U.S. military capabilities creeping closer to Russia’s northern flank.
Is World War III Really Likely?
Talk of a looming World War III over Greenland should be approached with caution. While the island has undeniably become a symbolic and strategic flashpoint, several realities temper the most extreme scenarios:
1. Collective defense frameworks: Greenland, as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, is covered by NATO’s collective defense guarantees (Article 5), meaning any armed attack on it would obligate mutual defense by allies, a powerful deterrent against unilateral aggression.
2. Diplomatic channels remain active: Despite heated rhetoric, U.S., Danish, and NATO leaders still engage in diplomacy and cooperation on Arctic security specifics.
3. Public and Regional Resistance: Greenlanders themselves emphasize sovereignty and control across resource and security decisions, complicating external ambitions.
Still, escalating military activity, alliance tensions, and great-power rivalry — particularly between NATO and Russia — create a volatile environment.
