finnews.id – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through its Center for Intelligent Mechatronics Research, has introduced a new medical device innovation in the form of an upper-arm exoskeleton. This device is specifically designed to help restore motor function and improve the quality of life of post-stroke patients.

An exoskeleton is an external framework located outside the body of a living organism or human, functioning to protect, support, and assist movement.

In brief:

  • In animals, exoskeletons are found in insects, crabs, and shrimp. This external framework protects internal organs and provides body structure. Examples include crab shells and the hard outer skin of insects.
  • In humans (technology), an exoskeleton is a robotic device or wearable suit worn outside the body to enhance strength, endurance, or assist medical rehabilitation. It is commonly used in the military, industrial, and healthcare sectors.

In short, an exoskeleton is an external supporting and protective framework, either natural or artificial.

BRIN Junior Expert Researcher Aditya Sukma Nugraha explained that this technology combines intelligent mechatronic systems with adaptive control. The goal is to create a rehabilitation process that is not only effective but also safe for users.

“By utilizing intelligent mechatronic technology, adaptive control systems, and integrated sensors, this exoskeleton is expected to support the rehabilitation process more effectively,” Aditya said while welcoming a visit from students of Bina Sarana Informatika University at the Samaun Samadikun Science and Technology Area, Bandung, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Challenges of Complex Dynamics

Aditya explained that the development of this medical device is based on complex dynamic systems. These systems must be able to respond to intricate variables, ranging from motor interactions and sensors to moving mechanical structures.

The main challenge in this development lies in nonlinearity characteristics, where the device’s response is not always proportional to the given input. Factors such as friction, actuator saturation, and external disturbances require advanced control strategies.
